To be a good researcher, you have to be able to work well with a wide variety of subjects (living or non-living, depending on your discipline), understand the specific methods used to conduct research, understand the subject that you are studying, be able to convince someone to give you the funds to study it, stay on track and on schedule, and speak and write persuasively.
